Where did my style come from?
"Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends." —Kate Spade
This is one of my favorite quotes, does this resonate with you? It hits right on the head for me, as a small child I always loved putting together my own outfits. My mom always tells me I was the kid wearing mix matched clothes but I was happy so she was ok with it. As I got older I used to take scissors to clothes to make them what I wanted, or I should say *try* to make them what I wanted, thank goodness I grew out of that stage and just found a really good tailor! By the way any of my Houston peeps, I swear by Marcello’s in the Houston Galleria. To this day I still like to take clothes home with me and get them tailored there. I haven’t done anything too crazy in Seattle but if I’m in a rush I generally go to Metro in the Medical Dental Building, she’s done stuff for me within an hour (you pay for it but it gets done)
Anyways, growing up going to private school I didn’t really have to an option to pick out multiple outfits- and thank goodness because at the time my family was going through a struggle, but I always loved the idea of getting to choose something different every day. PS- my family came out on the other side.
Fast forward to high school, this is where I truly found my love for clothes. I decided to go to public school, I had never been so wanted to test it out, with that came no uniforms. This was where I figured out how to wear one simple black top three different ways, or how changing shoes could make or break an outfit. I LOVED dressing up! I’ve always gravitated to simple clothing and adding jewelry to dress it up. When I was younger I would watch my mom get dressed and noticed she always wore statement pieces, she could be wearing a white blouse and dress pants but instead of going for the all-white look she would throw a hot pink blazer with some big peal earrings and call it day. I’m very similar (or try to be) I find it to be bold, simple but classy.
My mom gave me my love my pearls, I’m obsessed. You will often see pictures of me with pearls on specifically David Yurman. When I was graduating high school, I didn’t want a regular class ring that everyone was getting, I wanted something different, something I would always love. Y’all, I had no clue who this David Yurman was, I just saw this lemon citrine ring that I HAD to have. This is where the obsession began, by the way I still wear the ring, it’s 13 years old.
Here’s the thing, jewelry is one of my items I spend money on, instead of buying dupes that will rust and might turn my skin another color I prefer to save the money and invest in the real thing. We all have our things that are worth spending extra on, this is my thing.
Example, some people are HUGE on their luggage, spend money on Tumi or whatever where I’ll go to Costco, I just want a bag where the wheels don’t get stuck.
I guess another reason why I value jewelry so highly is because I hope to have a baby girl one day, and I would love to have pieces that meant so much to me to pass on. (What is something you invent your money on?? – let me know in the comments!)
I’m excited to start sharing my ideas and style with you all. Be prepared to see a lot of clothing priced high and low, my signature nail color (Big Apple red from OPI), David Yurman and pearls. When I say higher priced items, I mean like $100 tops, I don’t have that couture money. I’m also the girl that isn’t afraid to see if something went on sale- so I can get a price adjustment! I’ll keep y’all in the loop on items I’ve posted that might have gone on sale, so you can do the same if you choose!
